Welcome to the Hugo Alfvén Society

Hugo Alfvén, the composer of Midsommarvaka (the Midsummer Vigil), the ballet Bergakungen (the Mountain King),5 symphonies, some 60 art songs, innumerable choral songs and choral settings was one of Sweden's most all-round and fascinating personalities during the first half of the 20th century. The aim of the Hugo Alfvén Society is to promote the knowledge of his music and his other activities.

The year 2010 will commemorate the death of Alfvén which took place in 1960. You are invited to join performers and media within your ordinary activities sometime in 2010 under the heading "Hugo Alfvén in our hearts". Do tell us in advance so we can publish it on this homepage. Ask for ideas and proposals

    Nathan Leaf: Hugo Alfvén and his a cappella choral music
    Diss Univ. of Texas, Austin, 2006. UMI.
    The aim of this dissertation is to give a short biography especially in regard to the a cappella choral music, to characterise it, to translate all poems into English (almost half the book), to give rules how to pronounce the poems in Swedish - all this to allow English speaking singers to be well prepared to perform the songs.
