The Alfvén house was built after a subscription in occasion of Alfvén's 70th birthday in 1942. The house was constructed in 1944-45 by the local master builder Nils Skoglund but using the same plan as artist Bror Hjorth's house in Uppsala. Alfvén and his second wife Karin Adolphson could move into it in August 1945.
During the years 1929-35 they had lived in the Knorrings house at Åkerö during the summer and 1935-45 in the Lekatts and Sömskar houses at Tibble. Starting in 1939 when Alfvén retired from the director musices office at Uppsala university they stayed all the year through in the Sömskar house.
After the divorce from Maria (Marie Kröyer) in 1936 Hugo and Karin could get married in 1938. To her Hugo composed the often performed song "Saa tag mit Hjerte" in 1946. In 1956 Karin died. In 1959 at the age of 87 Hugo married again. His third wife, Anna Lund was born the same year as Karin and she was to live until 1990, long after the death of Hugo in 1960.
After Hugo's death the intentions in his will were executed resulting in a foundation which among other things took over the administration and maintenance of the home. Today it is in the possession and management of the Hugo Alfvén Foundation, Royal Academy of Music. The curator is Anders Lian.
